Devrim Erbil

Efe Okay created a compilation of animations for Devrim — a documentary about Devrim Erbil, one of Turkey's most celebrated modern painters, now streaming on Netflix. Directed by Batuhan Tunçer and produced by Vega Documentary, the film traces over six decades of Erbil's revolutionary artistic career, from his iconic paintings of Istanbul's cityscape and his lyrical abstractions of trees and birds, to his influence on generations of Turkish artists. Erbil was awarded the title of State Artist by the Turkish government in 1991 and has exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Bienal de São Paulo. For this project, Efe served as Designer and Animator, employing a cutting-edge pipeline combining Stable Diffusion AI image generation, Ebsynth for video stylisation, and After Effects for compositing — creating animated sequences that bring Erbil's distinctive painterly world into motion while remaining faithful to the artist's visual language. The result is a rare example of AI-assisted animation applied to fine art documentary storytelling.
